Writing a book with my Republican friend taught me about ties that bind
By Rana DiOrio, co-author of What Does It Mean To Be American? (Sourcebooks April 2019)

Elad lives on the East Coast, and I live on the West Coast. He is a veteran of the US Army, and I have never served in the military. He is of Israeli descent, and I am of Italian descent. He has the point of view of a strong man, and I have the point of view of a strong woman. He leans right, and I lean left. Always up to a challenge, he accepted.

So much had happened to each of us during the time between dinner that night in 2010 and the day in 2016 when we agreed to nurture this lofty idea into existence together. We were both drawing on life experiences we never imagined at the time. Read more.

By Elad Yoran, co-author of What Does It Mean To Be American? (Sourcebooks April 2019)

My wife and I try to instill in our children not only patriotism and love of country, but also an understanding of why America is unique and sense of duty to give back in their own way to the country that has given us so much.
“What Does It Mean to Be American?” This is a question that has intrigued me as far back as I can remember and trying to answer it has been a theme of my life. In writing a book that explores this topic for children, I hope to spark curiosity in young children, my own included, that will lead to a lifetime of the same love of country that has driven my story. Let’s show children what it means to be American and inspire them to honor our democracy.
By Rana DiOrio, co-author of What Does It Mean To Be American? (Sourcebooks April 2019)

I’m of Italian descent and lean to the left politically. Elad is of Israeli descent and leans to the right politically. We balanced one another’s perspectives. We listened to one another and empathized with the other’s point of view. We were kind to one another and discussed and debated the messages we wanted to convey in a non-partisan manner. It is my hope that when children and their caring adults read the book together, they share that same respect and empathy with one another. Because we can’t teach children what it means to be American through academic lesson. We have to show them, literally, every day. Read more.
